Close Ups & Close Encounters is an average woman's journey into the world of wildlife photography. It begins on a foggy morning out at sea. During the voyage our photographer S J Brown remembers how her career began, taking the reader back several years. She begins photographing butterflies, birds, and squirrels in her backyard. Later with her husband, and now spotter, geese, ducks, and swans are captured on film. Everyday life and wildlife photography soon become entwined Ospreys, herons, and turkeys are found on a camping trip. Later photographing wildlife in the snow challenges our photographer, and her spotter when they discover looks can be deceiving. The reader accompanies the pair on both successful and disappointing photo excursions. Things get a little tense when S. J. Brown gets a bit to close to an alligator. Our photographer also gets close to bears, lemurs, and iguanas. Elk, prairie dogs, and Lynx are also photographed. Her spotter Jay gets to close to a tiger and decides to leave the photography to his wife. The reader comes along on a multi day canoe trip. The journey leads through some rough water and our photographer plunges over a ledge into the depths of the river. Before the trip ends a fight between two Bald Eagles and an osprey ensues. The stories continue as our photographer approaches a black bear. The challenges of finding and later photographing a moose as well as some unexpected animals are told within the pages. The yearly ritual of horseshoe crabs attracts our photographer to pursue more encounters and photograph the crabs as well as some shore birds, a mudd turtle, and a few song birds as well. Along the way the reader shares the encounters of this wildlife photographer and gets close to more critters. Even a trip to the zoo becomes a wildlife encounter for this photographer. In the final chapter the reader follows along as S. J. Brown steps onto an island. After a successful visit, there is a rough departure. The book concludes with a message from the author.
