So I finally got around to watching the classic 1951 Disney adaptation of Lewis Carroll's book on Blu Ray the other week (it's taken me this long to do a short writeup) and I was not disappointed. This was one WEIRD movie, even more so when you consider the year it came out and the company that released it. There is no real story as such, it's just Alice (a little girl) saying that if she owned her own land, nothing would make sense (this is a rebellious child of the time) she then falls asleep and dreams that she is in the land of her own making, only to find out that a land that makes no sense, while being fun for awhile, is also not a great place to live. And when I say nothing makes sense, really, NOTHING makes sense. People talk gibberish, do strange things for no reason and generally run about with their lives doing things of little to no purpose. This works wonderfully as an animated movie as you can really explore the absurd (and the animators do frequently) and show the strangeness with a beautiful abstractness that you just could not do in live action (at the time) MILES better than the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp live action ego stroking love fest that was made a couple of years ago (yeah, it was a re-imagining, re-telling, re-later-whatever it was, but it was still all style and no substance) if you like Disney movies, this one is a must see. But prepare for some serious weirdness....

The story of a war hero who is serving his final three months in the army by working as a member of a CNT (Casualty Notification Team) he faces a dilemma when he starts getting friendly with a recently bereaved widow against his commanding officer's advice. Excellent acting from all three leads, Samantha Morton, Woody Harrelson (who won a best supporting ocsar nod for his performance) and Ben Foster (who should have been nominated) This movie is not for everyone, as it does contain some uncomfortable viewing including some outstanding acting scenes of families hearing the news of death of their loved ones. It's worth watching for the performances alone.

Miguel "Sugar" Santos is a Dominican baseball player who has been training in a baseball camp for years with the hope that one day he will be given the chance to prove himself in America and realizing his lifelong dream of playing in the major league. When he finally does get the chance to prove himself at a spring training camp and then playing for a minor league team in Iowa, he finds himself under immense pressure. Not only are his dreams on his shoulders but the hopes of his family who want him to succeed, rely on the money he sends to them weekly and the chance that they can one day follow him to the United States. This is a great baseball movie (which be warned, it is subtitles most of the way for those of you who care about that kind of stuff) that really makes you feel like you are following Miguel along with him every step of the way. Every problem he encounters, every situation he ends up in, every good (and bad) thing that happens to him and his friends, you feel like you are experiencing it with him on his journey to be a baseball superstar. If you are a fan of the sport I am sure you will have a great time watching this film, and even if you don't know the first thing about baseball like myself, you will still enjoy this movie for what it is. The story of a young man trying to adapt to life in a new country while following his dreams.
