This is a Beat'em up that may never be toppled.
These days Guardian Heroes commands high price tags for original Saturn copies and for good reason, this title was perhaps one of the most defining games of the Sega Saturn. Playing as if Street Fighter II dressed up in anime/medieval styles and took to the streets and hoards of foes, Guardian Heroes blended genres such as 2D fighters, Action RPGs, and Streets of Rage Co-op styled beat'em ups to great success. You play as one of 4 (eventually 5) heroes in the main story with different customizable statistics that actually matter. Characters can be built to chain basic hits much faster, have huge pools of MP for strong magic spells, heavy hitting attack and so on. You and a buddy also have an NPC you could command to help you in your onslaught against a crazy wizard kingdom and the spirit realms. I don't think I've seen any game to just pull off this unique again, I feel few games had had this relevance as a 2D scroller. Honestly, I just don't think there's any negatives I could point out without nitpicking hard. The game has a 6-player multiplayer mode on the Saturn (multi-tap necessary) which is a funy diversion for chaos. You can unlock a lot of characters from the story to use here though not all of them feel as developed as the main heroes. Thus, the low count of 5 heroes for the main story may be the only nitpick, but they each play differently so that negates the issue. If you don't want to pay the price for the Saturn original, a slightly remastered version will be hitting the Xbox 360's Live download service (XBLA). Obviously, it won't cost over $50 there since it's a digital copy. Whichever way you play it, this is a definitive chaotic 2D experience.

Hail to Lobotomy baby! You don't need Forever for Duke greatness.
Lobotomy helmed three FPS experiences on the Saturn and each of them achieved good success for the underdog Sega Saturn, as well as a lot of respect from Saturn gamers. Duke Nukem 3D is their 3rd and final success of the Lobotomy trio (consisting of Powerslave and Quake beside it). Duke 3D is originally a PC game and consoles of the time seldomly coudl ever have an uncompromised port, this one is no different. What is good about Duke on Saturn is that it plays fairly stable, includes an extra minigame (complete with silly intro theme), and it looks pretty good for its time to boot. If you played Quake (which I recommend and reviewed also on Saturn) before it, you'll be familiar with how Lobotomy handled the game and controls. This version even featured true head-to-head network play through Saturn's netlink, very impressive for this console era. Duke 3D shares a similar problem to Quake in that you'll have a learning curve to find the control setup you like best (there's even a hidden code that lets you use a Turok control setup, why this was code hidden and not apparent is beyond me.) Also, since compromises had to be made to make surethe game could be ported at all, not all levels are faithful to the original PC source material. Some levels are spliced and whatnot. This review was written post Duke Nukem Forever release, the infamously long delayed sequel of Duke 3D and let me tell you, I think this game holds up better. While Forever wants to evoke that classic feeling, only the classic 90s Duke can truly get the job done right in my opinion.

A 2D retro gecko experience.
2D games are traditionally said to be the Sega Saturn's strong point and Gex is helpful proof of that. The original Gex (unlike the sequels which would follow on off the Saturn) is a 2D side scrolling platformer that places players as a gecko who can cling to surfaces, whip, and wisecrack. Said gecko Gex goes on a romp through TV themed worlds based on programs such as horror movies, cartoons, wild life settings, and Kung Fu cinema with good scenery, silly enemies, and actually good tunes to boot. Brought to life by an actual comedian's voice work, the game is a good 20+ level run. The only main downside of this retro gecko's game: passwords, which is strange given that the Saturn has internal and external memory (and the original 3DO version had saves. It also feels pretty forgiving with a fair amount of extra lives strewn about but this is nitpicking. Lastly, voice triggers seem to be fairly common as some will tell you, if this gets irritating to you, there's an option to turn it off in the options menu. For a cheap price Gex is worth a playthrough and as a 2D title feels like it stands tall enough over its later iterations.
