film soundtrack that doesn't sound like a soundtrack
This score, to the Philip Noyce movie about the amazing (and true) journey of three young Aborigine girls, by PG is haunting and sublime, and can be enjoyed with or without the film (which incidentally I have seen several times and can thoroughly recommend). I have always been a fan of PG's solo work and his resurgence/comeback a few years back which spawned some great music dvds and then this great soundtrack. The best way to listen to this cd is on a good stereo system, as it is immaculately recorded and engineered, the low end (bass) extension needs to be heard to be believed. Most so called 'original soundtracks' to films are just compilations of older songs so it is rare to find an OST that is actually that AND can be enjoyed without visuals. Beware though as 'haunting' is close to frightening for some and parts do resemble horror, as I think is the intention.

For 1080p/ 24fps display/ dts hd amp owners
Even if you don't have any hd-dvds I would still recommend obtaining a player such as this, especially if you have the requisite full hd 1920x1080 resolution panel. Despite the 'death' of the format there are hundreds of reduced price hd-dvd titles around online (far more than other 'failed' formats such as super audio cd and dvd-audio) so it is still possible to build a good back catalogue collection. Some people are even selling their players with large collections. Indeed it would appear no future or additional catalogue titles wil be released, but you will still be able to play your collection of superb quality hd-dvds and all your u.k. region 2 dvds (upscaled to 1080), like universal dvd players that support sacd/dvd-audio will still play your dvds. The studios only stopped releasing titles on the format due to Toshiba stopping production of the players, not because of any failings of the hd-dvd format (unlike blu-ray which still hasn't really been sorted out). The player itself is reasonably well made but be aware of the slow start up time and the distractingly bright blue light around power button. Also, if you want to take advantage of TrueHd lossless sound you will need a modern amp whioch decodes the audio via hdmi such as the Onkyo sr605 or the more expensive Pioneer/Yamaha ranges. You can obtain the TrueHd sound via analogue 5.1 inputs into an older amp/receiver but only on the EP35 and XE1 which have the necessary outputs. I have 4 different Toshiba hd-dvd players (E1,XE1,XA1) and this one and have had no problems with any of them.

ooh! e's got an arm off!
This review is for the hd-dvd version which is a distinct improvement in picture quality over the (very good)standard dvd. Sound is superb and must be heard through a powerful surround sound system. This is an object lesson in subtle comedy, it just WORKS as a movie and is the funniest film i have seen. There is too much great dialogue to take in on one viewing. The ensemble cast is also excellent. References to Romero zombie (Z!)movies are a great touch and familiarity with those films will enhance the experience. Watch it and watch it again, you won't be able to help yourself and the ending is great. Disappointment with Hot Fuzz made up for by this.
