an almost compelling non-hero
Crais stands out within the 'locale' police/criminal writers like Sanford, Lescroart and Connelly in developing a non-hero who can develop depth and attraction for a character whose motivations conflict with each other. Is the criminal aspects of the main character the flaw? It certainly is the dominant motivation of his growth over the years. Or, is the flaw the character trait which gets him to prison? Whichever it is, Crais builds a totally enjoyable novel where you don't root for the bad guy turned good, but you understand his eventual motivations and maybe have a bit of compassion for his developing self insights.
