Robert Burns : Robert Burns Collection CD (2003) Expertly Refurbished Product

Pleasant and unchallenging.
Sympathetic (and very old!) recordings make this album a light insight to a very weighty subject.
A good introduction to Burns' voluminous output.
Quite satisfied.

Al Stewart - Sparks of Ancient Light
As an avid fan since I first came accross an emaciated minstrel just retuing like a water colour in the rainrned from Paris sometime in the 60's (he was one of many support artists at a 'Watersons' folk evening at Birmingham Town Hall of all places!)I had to add this to what by now is an impressive Al Stewart collection.
He can be a brilliant wordsmith ("In a moment from a Bogart movie, in a country where they turn back time you go stolling through the crowd like Peter Lorrie contmplating a crime. She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolour in the rain" has to be the most profound first couple of line of any 'hit' song in history)but that was many years ago.
The last few albums - this one included - have tended to sound like someone who has sat down to write some songs with little stimuli other than a time deadline. It tries to soar like an Eagle but it tends to flap like a duck. Most of the tracks are derivations of songs that appeared on 'A Beach Full of Shells' - which did soar in one or two places and which were clearly seen as being worthy of emulating. All in all the weakest offering since 'Down in the Cellar, - but brilliantly performed and superbly produced.
And after all it is the boy from Canford Bottom who walked home from Bournemouth Pleasure Gardens after his first bonk in 1962 - and for me he can do no wrong.

A Great Introduction to a Great Blues Icon
Yes - I'd give it 5 !
A great introduction to one of the great exponents of Delta Blues that he carved his own sub-genre from.
This album has some great old standards - and one or two odd-balls - and has a good dollop of live recordings which are electric. There's some acoustic stuff here as well (arf!)
The devoted 'Hooky' will have all these tracks already - but if you're looking to add a musical icon of the 20th Century to your collection you could do an awful lot worse than this - so just boogie on down, y'all - 'cos this here's THE Boogie Man!
