A Yen For My Thoughts by J.A. Leiper.
Well, what can I say about this masterpiece? It’s not often in your life do you come across a book that makes you feel the pain and struggle through the author as you read and turn each and every page. It’s almost like you are transferred back in time alongside Gerald as he walks you through his journey, from one chapter to the next. It represents a time we all wish never had existed, but it did, and this book gives an insight into one unique man‘’s experience of such a time and place. It is clearly very well written, flowing nicely throughout the chapters with some fascinating images that support the text, which I found useful. Of course there is much sadness in this book but it is this that gives it the depth - it is certainly a reminder of how fortunate we are today. It is fascinating also to read about Hong Kong during the war - a very different place to how it is today - and it was people like Gerald who contributed to the foundations of what is today one of the most important financial centres in the world. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who have an interest in this era - particularly the Far East and war time, because it is a unique story of survival through the life of a very respected, intelligent and clearly compassionate man, from a non military background. For that reason, I (a non military man) found it easier to relate to, trying to imagine what it must have been like for him during this shocking time. I would recommend this book without any hesitation. In fact, I insist you read it! J. A. Leiper, I salute you!!
