Additional Information
THE NEWEST SOUND AROUND marked the debut of both jazz singer Jeanne Lee and "third stream" pianist Ran Blake. It's a fascinating document--moody, dissonant, bluesy, and an altogether more musical affair than a related avant-garde entity such as Patty Waters's self-titled ESP debut. Of special interest are the slow, sure "Blue Monk" (with Abbey Lincoln lyrics) and a rare cover of the exotic novelty "Where Flamingos Fly," which bears comparison with the Helen Merrill/Gil Evans version on DREAM OF YOU.
