The story of the Presidential Armies of India is virtually the history of the formation of the Great Indian Army, under English rule. The East India Company set up administrative jurisdictions in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata), Madras (now Chennai) and Bombay (now Mumbai), each under a President or a Governor, hence Presidency . The book traces the role of these Presidential Armies and, in particular, their part in squashing the great Bengal Sepoy Mutiny. It traces the origin and progress of the Indian Artillery, the role of Lord Robert Clive, and their role on various expeditions, including the march to Bamian . First published in 1890, for students of military history, particularly that of the Indian Army, it is an essential study. About the Author Col S. Rivett-Carnac was an eminent Indian military historian, who was a member of the East India Company during the 19th Century.
