Reviews
This is an honest account by someone (he seems at the time to have been a bit of a ne'er-do-well) who tried to play spy without knowing what the word meant and landed himself in boiling-hot water. The book, which is as exciting as any novel, proves a useful moral: leave this business to the pros., "It's outrageous that an educated man and a gifted writer like Mr. Mathews could make such a public confession of such shameful activities."--Q. Kuhlmann, author of The Eye of Anguish: Subversive Activity in the German Democratic Republic, "So what you have at the end of the day is a book that's easy to like, an unusual pleasure: an American expatriate spy fantasy, and a very entertaining novel. Of course it is a novel. Right?" -- New York Times, "So what you have at the end of the day is a book that's easy to like, an unusual pleasure: an American expatriate spy fantasy, and a very entertaining novel. Kuhlmann, author of The Eye of Anguish: Subversive Activity in the German Democratic Republic, "Harry Mathews is the only American author I know whose utter originality does not erode his heart and his content." -- Ned Rorem "One of the most remarkable prose stylists presently writing in English." -- San Francisco Chronicle "It's outrageous that an educated man and a gifted writer like Mr. Mathews could make such a public confession of such shameful activities." -- Q. Synopsis
In the early 1970s, Harry Mathews, then living in France, was commonly reputed to be a CIA agent--and so he decided to act the part. Part spellbinding thriller, part gag, this memoir documents Mathews's experiences as a would-be spy during the coup in Chile, Watergate, and the close of the Vietnam War, when various foreign agencies decided he would have to be liquidated...., "It's outrageous that an educated man and a gifted writer like Mr. Mathews could make such a public confession of such shameful activities."--Q. Kuhlmann, author of The Eye of Anguish: Subversive Activity in the German Democratic Republic, Through a series of improbable coincidences, in the early 1970s Harry Mathews, then living in France, was commonly reputed to be a CIA agent. Even friends had their suspicions, which were only reinforced each time he tried to deny such a connection. With growing frustration at his inability to make anyone believe him, Mathews decided to act the part. My Life in CIA documents Mathews's experiences as a would-be spy during 1973, where amid charged world events--the coup in Chile, Watergate, the ending of the Vietnam War--he found himself engaged in a game that took sinister twists as various foreign agencies decided he was a presence that should be eliminated. Harry Mathews has turned these strange events into a spellbinding thriller where the line between fact and fiction gets relentlessly blurred., Through a series of improbable coincidences, in the early 1970s Harry Mathews, then living in France, was commonly reputed to be a CIA agent. El artículo correspondía al de la descripción. Llegó quizá en un bolsa con poca protección por lo que el libro llegó con daños en la cubierta. Hablé con el vendedor y me ofreció muy amablemente un reembolso. Muy contento con el vendedor.

Item in condition described. The shipment tracking was completely opaque and shipping was slow. The seller used a third-party shipping solution provider that gave a USPS tracking number, but, USPS had no real tracking info. I was not able to see any delivery estimate until the day before it arrived. When the delivery date estimate finally materialized, it was off by two days, saying arrival would be on e.g. the 5th when it actually arrived on the 3rd.

100% - Fully Refunded as books was not in “very good” condition (the binding was falling apart) I contacted them and they replied within 10 mins, apologize & refunded me the full amount (including postage.) They said I could either keep the book or donate it to an op-shop etc. Even tho the book wasnt in the best condition their communication and hassle-free refund for not as described items was outstanding hence the positive feedback. Fast post, excellent communication - Thank you : )
