A fascinating and beautiful book....' Daily Telegraph 'Lucid, demure and unemphatic. Her wit is dry and subtle.' The New Yorker

Synopsis
'It is pleasant to watch the quiet skilful worker. He sits low on a stool, the structural withies five feet long waving out in front of him as the hive turns round and round to his weaving. He has that look that comes to all men who work their wits against wild things, of thinking with their fingers.' On the eve of the Second World War the historian and artist, Dorothy Hartley, travelled by car and bicycle to document the crafts and cottage industries of England. Using photographs, meticulously drawn sketches and vivid descriptions, she created a fascinating panorama of skills and practices that have long vanished from the British Isles, such as thatching haystacks, making horse collars for field work or weaving crab pots from green willow. Made in England captures life before mechanisation and the industrialisation of the countryside. Today, the experience of rediscovering these fragments is strange and wondrous. Shining through is a deep appreciation of the skills and experience involved, from the fineness of a blacksmith's work to the delicacy needed to fell a tree, and the satisfaction of making things by hand with materials from landscapes close to home. Our new edition includes Dorothy Hartley's original drawings and photographs from the first edition published in 1939. Book jacket., In the mid 1930s, Dorothy Hartley travelled England by car and bicycle gathering material for the book. Published as a companion volume to Food in England, the book is a portrait not only of the rural industries - whether wood-working or stonework, weaving or pottery, but also of the people engaged in these occupations. Written in direct prose belying her innate curiosity, each chapter covers a specific skill, and is illustrated with Hartley's own photographs and charming, accurate pen-andink drawings. As these traditional skills become practised less widely, our connection to ancient knowledge, and the land, is threatened. The republication of this book, together with an introduction from the Turner Prize winning architect and artist, Fran Edgely (from Assemble), is aimed at restoring some of those lost links and reviving interest in craft and making by hand., In the mid 1930s, Dorothy Hartley travelled England by car and bicycle gathering material for the book. El artículo correspondía al de la descripción. Llegó quizá en un bolsa con poca protección por lo que el libro llegó con daños en la cubierta. Hablé con el vendedor y me ofreció muy amablemente un reembolso. Muy contento con el vendedor.

Item in condition described. The shipment tracking was completely opaque and shipping was slow. The seller used a third-party shipping solution provider that gave a USPS tracking number, but, USPS had no real tracking info. I was not able to see any delivery estimate until the day before it arrived. When the delivery date estimate finally materialized, it was off by two days, saying arrival would be on e.g. the 5th when it actually arrived on the 3rd.

As the title mentions awesomebooksusa, most books have been rarely awesome but the book prices have been almost generous, granted. Unbelievable services : 3 day international shipping, prompt dispatch, newly book condition, provided tracking, secure package, exactly received book, and safe deliveries. My gratitude to the seller’s thoughts of the needy buyers sending the wanted books to the new residence. Many thanks! Arabella
