À propos de ce produit
Product Information
When it was first published in France in 1961 as Folie et Deraison: Histoire de la Folie a l'age Classique, few had heard of a thirty-four year old philosopher by the name of Michel Foucault. By the time an abridged English edition was published in 1967 as Madness and Civilization, Michel Foucault had shaken the intellectual world. This translation is the first English edition of the complete French texts of the first and second edition, including all prefaces and appendices, some of them unavailable in the existing French edition. History of Madness begins in the Middle Ages with vivid descriptions of the exclusion and confinement of lepers. Why, Foucault asks, when the leper houses were emptied at the end of the Middle Ages, were they turned into places of confinement for the mad? Why, within the space of several months in 1656, was one out of every hundred people in Paris confined? Shifting brilliantly from Descartes and early Enlightenment thought to the founding of the Hopital General in Paris and the work of early psychiatrists Philippe Pinel and Samuel Tuke, Foucault focuses throughout, not only on scientific and medical analyses of madness, but also on the philosophical and cultural values attached to the mad. He also urges us to recognize the creative and liberating forces that madness represents, brilliantly drawing on examples from Goya, Nietzsche, Van Gogh and Artaud. The History of Madness is an inspiring and classic work that challenges us to understand madness, reason and power and the forces that shape them.

- 0***e (156)- Évaluations laissées par l'acheteur.Dernier moisAchat vérifiéI changed my mind, and cancelled this item very soon after the order was placed. The Seller was able to respond to this request promptly and my money was reimbursed without fuss. I have purchased from Awesome a number of times, and (as reflected in the customer ratings) find customer service very good, books ordered to date are accurate to description - i.e. very good to nearly new condition. With their competitive prices I will continue to buy from this seller in the future.
- 1***n (253)- Évaluations laissées par l'acheteur.6 derniers moisAchat vérifiéFirstly, I believe in HONEST reviews. Unfortunately the book had loads of underlining in it, but I was refunded straight away, I have bought from this company plenty of times, buying 100's of books and I've never had any problems before, mistakes happen and it was rectified immediately, therefore I will still continue to buy from them and also HIGHLY recommend this company, communication was quick and professional and it was well packaged with fast delivery. - d***e (683)- Évaluations laissées par l'acheteur.6 derniers moisAchat vérifiéThis seller gave excellent communication & a full refund when the book I ordered was found to be damaged at the warehouse. They sent a very apologetic email explaining the issue & refunded me straight away. I have used this seller before & they have always been reliable & prompt with delivery. The items have also been in even better condition than described for an amazingly reasonable price. This was not their fault, so I would definitely buy from this seller again & recommend them to others. The Penguin Book of Art Writing-Karen Wright, Martin Gayford, 97 (n°315028511989)
