Monmouthshire has usually been seen as staunchly Royalist in the Civil War, but Jeremy Knight shows that the picture was less clear-cut. Some gentry sided with Parliament, others sought only to live in peace, or supported whichever side was in the ascendancy. Below the gentry there was a general distrust of the Royalists and a desire for freedom from the exactions of either side. The story of gentry, clergy, soldiers and the people of the county, of the manoeuvring armies, culminating in the epic siege of Raglan, and the developing characters of the main players, is told in Jeremy Knight's usual wry style.
