The Sylvania 2A3 vintage tube and socket are vintage parts to keep your old electronics as close to their original state as possible. All tubes and tube sockets are not created equally. The quality differences from other 2A3’s, however is not very noticeable, making the Sylvania a good economical choice. The Sylvania 2A3 performs at its best in vintage equipment, bringing out the true tones as originally intended. For appearances, the tube is an hourglass shape tapering down to its three pins. Underneath the class lie the coiled springs, putting it in the familiar Spring Tops class. These coils stand above two filaments. The tube and sockets use less watts to run than other old electronic parts and sound amazing with preamps, amps, or amplifiers. The vacuum tube on the Sylvania 2A3, as is the case with all tubes, is a device that controls the electric current between electrodes in an evacuated container. Vacuum tubes rely on thermionic emission of electrons from a hot filament or a cathode heated by the filament. A phototube achieves electron emission through the photoelectric effect. The simplest vacuum tube—the diode—contains only a heater, a heated electron-emitting cathode, and a plate. The current only flows in one direction through the device between the two electrodes, as electrodes emitted by the cathode travel through the tube and are collected by the anode. One or more control grids within the tube allows the current between the cathode and anode to be controlled by the voltage on the grid and the grids. Other tubes are beam-powered tubes, gas-filled tubes, miniature tubes, and multi-section tubes. Batteries and AC power drive the electricity to the tubes. Sylvania was formed from the Hygrade Sylvania Corporation in 1931. The company was a forerunner in preliminary research on fluorescent technology and then produced the first linear or tubular fluorescent lamp, as featured at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. In 1959, Sylvania merged with General Telephone to form General Telephone and Electronics. The company is a supplier of electrical distribution equipment, including transformers, switchgears, and commercial load centers, push buttons, indicator lights, and hard-wired devices. It manufactures and markets a wide range of lighting products for homes, businesses, and vehicles and holds a leading share of the North American market.
