Boulder Dash EX provides a nostalgic trip for gamers old enough to remember Commodore 64/128, ColecoVision, or arcade versions of the Dig Dug-like game of the mid-'80s. This Game Boy Advance edition includes both an updated "EX" puzzle version, which can be played in Story Mode or Battle Mode, as well as the original classic arcade version, complete with hero Rockford, as well as a new optional map feature and tutorial mode.
Story Mode focuses on a series of puzzle-solving stages where the player must save Sonya from the Dark King, while Battle Mode centers on arcade-style gameplay requiring speed and technique. The classic game, Boulder Dash, is identical to the original arcade version and features graphics, sounds, rules, and layouts from nearly two decades ago. Gameplay remains consistent with the action puzzler's roots; basically avoiding enemies, collecting gems, and dropping rocks while burrowing deep underground.
EX game Story Mode features six unique environments to explore, including worlds of sand, fire, and forest, collectible cards with information and data about monsters lurking in the levels, and a host of items ranging from rocks and time bombs to magic gloves, mystical mushrooms, hope crystals, and more. In addition to solo play, Battle Mode options include multiplayer action for up to four players (link cables required) with assigned characters Alex, Sonya, Nick, or Emily, as well as an option for computer-controlled opponents. Single-cartridge multiplayer is supported.
