Mr. Magoo began in 1949 as a near-sighted old man in a popular series of short cartoons exhibited in movie theatres. Magoo later reappeared in a television series called THE MR. MAGOO SHOW (1960-1962), all ten hours of which appear here. Brilliant and revered actor Jim Backus (millionaire Thurston Howell in GILLIGAN'S ISLAND) voiced the character and gave Magoo a unique personality. Magoo's near-sightedness always has him mistaking one object for another (a flower pot for the body of an old-fashioned telephone, and a coffee cup for the receiver, etc.), and the humor springs from the fact that Magoo refuses to ever admit, or even seem to realize, that there is any problem whatsoever. He blithely blunders along, continuously muttering to himself as he mistakes every conceivable object for a different one, almost getting killed practically every time he turns around.
