The sequel to NBA Live 97 has a few new features other than just roster updates. Modes of play include: season, exhibition, playoffs, and a 3-point shootout. Season mode allows for 28, 56, or 82 game seasons to be played. Again, as usual, the game features full licensing which allows EA Sports to include the real players, teams, and team logos.
Season play tracks many statistical categories and showcases the league leaders. Players can be created and traded. During the action icon passing is a new feature to the NBA Live series. Instead of trying to use the D-Pad to aim your pass, you can simply choose the player and automatically pass to them. Another new feature is selecting what type of slam dunk you wish to perform. In the past the dunk was random as it was based on the player or range to the basket. Now, by the direction players press on the D-Pad, they can do specific types of dunks.
