The Bitmap Brothers continue in the theme of RTS war-gaming (Z and Steel Soldiers) with World War II: Frontline Command, which takes players into the heart of WWII combat action near the end of the global conflict. Reactions of individual units in Frontline Command are based on morale, with factors such as bravery, confidence, despair, and cowardice playing a large part in the success or failure of mission objectives. Featuring 3D real-time tactics, the game contains 25 single-player missions, usually depicting events or situations ranging from the D-Day invasion at Normandy to the attack on Adolph Hitler's stronghold in the mountains of southern Germany. Missions can be played as either a 12-mission "recruit" campaign or 20-mission non-linear "veteran" campaign.
Basic gameplay features line-of-sight vision, fog of war, realistic weapons range and infantry formations, health and morale bars, and control of both Allied and Axis units, including rifleman, submachine gunner, heavy machine gunner, commander, mortar, engineer, sniper, flame thrower, and recon. Vehicles, ranging from jeeps and half-tracks to a variety of trucks and nearly a dozen types of tanks, also play an important role in mission accomplishment. Internet-based multiplayer action offers various options such as locking games to prevent additional players, booting players out of the game, time limits, an Assassination Game, and a choice between Recruit and Veteran modes.
