I just discovered that the seller refunded only half the money. He claims that I broke the thermostats. From my POV, they did not work from the start. Since then, I bought two brand-new thermostats, installed them, and they are working fine. That indicates that (1) my HVAC system works with Nest thermostats, and (2) I have the requisite skills to install them.
This entire transaction seems sketchy. I'm not happy about the partial refund.

Easy to install. Took about 5 minutes to set up. My Nest thermostat is in my downstairs living room (the coldest room in the house) but our upstairs master bedroom gets afternoon sunlight and gets MUCH warmer than the rest of the house. So I bought this additional sensor to place in the master bedroom to help even out the temps in the house. Note: you will need a coin to open the back of the sensor. Once open you can scan the QR code inside for easy pairing with your Nest thermostat.
