Set far in the future, in a smoggy steampunk world of towering steel structure, Resonance of Fate is a role-playing game for high-def consoles, with tactical firearm combat and a cinematically driven style of storytelling. Players guide a paramilitary squad of young, disaffected adventurers, against the monolithic Cardinal organization, which now rules over all aspects of humanity. Guns are the weapon of choice in this future dystopia. Combat features elements of both real-time action and turn-based tactics. Players control one character at a time, freely moving around and choosing weapons in a limited period. Once the character makes an attack, the turn ends and the action moves to another character in the fight. As the player sets the active character's position and weapons, enemy characters can move around as well, creating a dynamic flow in the battles.
The adventure plays out in a dismal, urban environment that reaches ever upwards. Sweeping environmental changes have led to the poisoning of planet Earth. Deadly gases of unknown origin have covered the surface of the planet, exterminating most of the human population. The remaining people now live close together, in a metropolis that has grown up around an enormous device called Basel, which slowly cleans the air and ground. This last bastion of human civilization rises through skyscraper layers, with the wealthiest and most influential people inhabiting luxurious spaces high above, while society's less fortunate survive in the grit and grime below. Known as End of Eternity in Japan, Resonance of Fate was developed by tri-Ace, creator of the Japanese RPG series Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile.
