In the mid-1980s Duran Duran worked closely with HIGHLANDER director Russell Mulcahy on a series of extravagant music videos. The soaring budgets reflected the decadence of the times, and subsequently gained heavy rotation on MTV. The next natural step was for Mulcahy to capture the band on the road, and he did so in spectacular style with the concert film ARENA. Shot in 1984, the live footage is largely taken from a performance in Oakland, and is interspersed with live action footage that neatly features actor Milo O'Shea, who played Professor Duran Duran in the 1968 film BARBARELLA. ARENA is a vital snapshot of the heady excesses of the 1980s, and is a fascinating insight into the lofty ambitions that many groups aspired to.
