It concludes with a chapter exploring and assessing the Puritan heritage of the United States and its influence on the modern world., This stimulating and controversial book explores how the religious and political turmoil of 17th century England set the tone of the American character in the Puritans it sent to our shores. The book traces the Puritans' emergence early in the reign of Elizabeth I; the spectrum of their religious and political beliefs; and their creed of purity and asceticism in the name of Christ that found many followers at all levels of English society. The fear that their radical ideas engendered in the reigning Church and government, and their own frustration at the failure of their aims at home led them finally on their brave course across the ocean to America. Adair contends that their fierce morality and sense of independence became a major force in shaping the American character, and that it is these two traits that are still distinctly part of the culture that we export abroad.

    I received my book in absolutely pristine condition, better than described! Which is impressive because the copy is from 1930 and it looks like it has never been handled. It shipped very quickly, even faster than the estimated time given by a week. It was packaged very carefully. The book and shipping price was also very fair considering the age and condition of the book and the shipping speed. I am very pleased with this seller and will be ordering from them again in the future.
